The recent discovery of a giant salamander fossil in Japan has revolutionized our understanding of the family's history. This find, made by fossil collector Eiichi Kitabayashi, has revealed a new genus and species of giant salamander, named Limnospondylus ajimuensis. The fossil, dating back 3.5 million years, was found in a warm, wet lakeland in Kyushu, Japan, which was vastly different from the cooler Japan of today. The vertebrae's unique features, such as its compact profile and broad, heavy bases, set it apart from all known giant salamander genera. This discovery highlights the importance of Japan as a crucial region for understanding the evolutionary history of giant salamanders. The fossil's size, estimated to be around 3.6 feet, and its growth rings, suggest a lifespan of approximately 17-18 years. The fossil's habitat, a wide, freshwater lake fringed by marshes and forest, was home to a diverse range of animals, including Stegodon elephants, rhinos, alligators, and southern turtles. The study of this fossil has also shed light on the challenges faced by giant salamanders during the transition from the Pliocene to the Pleistocene. As the world cooled, lakes and wetlands began to shrink, and the standing water habitat of the giant salamander became increasingly scarce. This led to the decline of the genus, with the river-loving relative, Andrias japonicus, surviving the change in far better shape. The discovery of this new genus and species has expanded our understanding of the diversity and range of giant salamanders, and has highlighted the importance of preserving extant species for the future.
